Training Session: Bibliographic Management Systems

Training Session – Bibliographic Management Systems
March 7, 2013 – Building A, Library

11.00am – 12.30pm
Bibliographic Management Systems – Introduction & Overview
This course explains what bibliographic management systems (also known as reference or citation management software) are, why they are useful for any kind of research, and what to look out for when considering the use of one of the numerous available bibliographic management applications. Some systems (EndNote, Citavi, Zotero) are demonstrated as examples, among these are web-based and desktop applications, commercial and non-commercial systems.

1.45pm – 3.15pm
Bibliographic Management with EndNote
EndNote is a popular and powerful bibliographic management system for Windows and Macintosh. The course gives an overview of EndNote, shows the import of search results (the use of import filters, the direct export and an online search from within EndNote), demonstrates how to generate bibliographies and explains some special features of EndNote. The sharing of references and the collaboration in groups will be demonstrated with EndNote Web.

3.30pm – 5.00pm
Bibliographic Management with Mendeley
Mendeley is both a desktop and a web reference management program for managing and sharing references and research papers. It combines Mendeley Desktop, a PDF and reference management application and Mendeley Web, an online social network for researchers. The course gives an overview of the system and its features, demonstrates the import of search results from databases and shows how Mendeley works in combination with word processing software.
