Web of Science and Google Scholar Linkage

Now Google Scholar offers a direct linking to the Web of Science. As we are a subscriber to the Web of Science a second citation rate should appear in your Google Scholar results list. It will link you to the appropriate “Citing Articles Landing Page” in Web of Science.

Web of Science News: August 2013

Some new features were added to the Web of Science (WoS) in the July release:

Auto-suggest for publication name
When you start to type your desired publication name in the Publication Name field, a list of the ten most relevant results to your query will appear. The suggestions refine as you continue to type. You may turn off the suggestions.

Spelling corrections
If no results are found relating to your search, “Did you mean” suggestions will be displayed for common misspellings in the topic and title fields.

Overlay sign in screen
The sign in function is opened in an overlay so that you do not have to leave your current search page.

New output of records menu
Now the output bar is located above and below the search results and it is displayed on the full record page, too. It includes a new “Select Page” option and a drop down menu for additional output formats. Completing the output is done through an overlay, guiding you through the process without disrupting your workflow.

Book Citation Index Trial

We have access to the Book Citation Index as part of the Web of Science during a trial period until March 15th, 2013.

The Book Citation Index has a coverage of over 40,000 books and book chapters, starting with publication year 2005, but only 12% are from the subject area Physics/Chemistry (September 2012).

Jump directly to the Book Citation Index – Science: http://www.webofknowledge.com/?DestApp=WOS&editions=BSCI
or use the general Web of Science URL at http://www.db-hosts.mpg.de/WoS/.

Web of Science News: August 2012

Some new features were added to the Web of Science (WoS) in the August upgrade:

Calendar with processing date option
You may limit your search easily by a particular date range using the new calendar format. Now it is possible to find documents that were added to the WoS during a particular range as opposed to when they were originally published. Please note that June 1, 2011 is the earliest processing date you can select.

Alert enhancements
Now it is possible to create a citation alert from any results page and to renew all search alerts at once.

Organization-enhanced search field
The new organization-enhanced search field allows you to find publications of an institution or university including different name variations. You may pick the organization you are looking for from a list of institutional names.
We do not recommend to use this field because not all name variations are unified to an organization name. If you are looking for the publications of the Max Planck Society 10-20% of the papers are missing. So you should be careful by using this new search field. Better use the search string with various name variants for our institute. Enter in the advanced search field:
AD=(((FRITZ HABER INST) OR FHI) SAME BERLIN) – see http://www.biochem.mpg.de/en/facilities/ivs/SupportTraining/InstitutsbezLitRecherchen/Tabellen/index.html.

Web of Science News: May 2012

The Web of Science (WoS) May release includes some enhancements. Among these are:

Left hand truncation

  • Now Web of Science supports left hand truncation in the topic and title fields.

More complete cited references data

  • More items in Web of Science display more complete cited reference data including full article or book title, publisher information and URL.
  • From now on it’s possible to mark and export the cited references from an article’s bibliography.
  • These more complete references provide more ways to search for cited references. WoS now enables to search for a cited article or book title in a Cited Reference Search. But bear in mind that citation variants are common so that citations which are not cited correctly will not be listed. A better practice is to use the journal abbreviation.
