Research Impact at the Article Level

Should an article’s social shares (e.g. in Twitter) or the number of readers in online reference managers be measured? Should these uses and mentions be something that is considered along with citations in published literature?

Article level metrics (read altmetrics: a manifesto) are available on different journals. Several publishers offer data collected from third parties and track different social media sites and online reference managers (e.g. based on Altmetrics). Some are using citations through CrossRef or article usage data from server logs in addition.

Here are some examples:

The functionality of bibliographic management systems for mobile devices is often highly limited. But there are some solutions (both iOS and Android) available for Zotero (while there are no official Zotero apps for mobile devices). So you may access and edit your Zotero library on your mobile phone or tablet.

Database Search Tips

The Information Retrieval Services (BM) have prepared some database support sheets. Topics are search tips for Web of Science, Scopus and patents. A very useful introduction on AutoAlerts (for Web of Science) will show you how to obtain a weekly update of literature of interest.

SciFinder Structure Editor

The SciFinder Web structure editor allows users to draw structures for substance and reaction searches. There has been a new structure editor available since October 2013 that does not require a Java plug-in for web browsers. It is now set as the default structure editor and the most features are implemented.
