Comparison of Reference Management Systems

There are a lot of comparisons of commercial and non-commercial reference management software available on the web. We recommend the following tables created by librarians:

To decide which one of the many reference management systems to use, first aks yourself the following questions:

  • Which system do my colleagues use?
  • Is the system compatible with my operating system/word processor?
  • Which databases are available for import?

Now available: EndNote X7

EndNote X7 for Windows has been released – X7 for Mac will come in July.

EndNote X7 has several new features to make working with PDFs easier. Now EndNote can automatically import PDFs from a selected folder and rename PDFs during the import process. The PDFs will be attached to existing records instead of creating new ones if those records already exist in your EndNote library.
With the new release you are able to create a bibliography in Word with seperate sections for seperate topics and add citations or reference lists to Microsoft PowerPoint slides (only for Windows). Three new reference types are available: interview, podcast and press release.

Share Groups & References with EndNote

Thomson Reuters offers EndNote Web for free now under the new name EndNote Basic.

Now it is easier to share references and groups with colleagues who do not have a EndNote license. You may share references (without attachements) in groups, give others read or write access, add references to the groups you share and import the references from someone else’s shared group into your library.

See the YouTube video on Sharing References with EndNote Web.
